Women Engineers Group Tours FSEC

April 4, 2011

UCF's Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) hosted an international gathering of women engineers during a stormy evening last week as part of a summit designed to encourage collaborative research opportunities and elevate issues faced by women entering the field.

Attendees of the Women's International Research Engineering Summit (WIRES) took a late afternoon tour of FSEC on March 30 and were briefed on research projects conducted there in the areas of hydrogen and fuel cells, buildings and energy efficiencies, the environment, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy and alternative transportation systems. They also toured the FSEC building, considered of the most energy efficient buildings in the world when it was built in 1995.

Debra Reinhart, assistant vice president for research and a professor of civil, environmental and construction engineering, and Pamela McCauley-Bush, a professor of industrial engineering and management systems, were among the 100 U.S. and international engineers selected to attend the conference.

The event was held at Disney's Contemporary Resort March 29-31 and included presentations focusing on the research cluster areas of sustainable energy, health care and clean water. For more information on WIRES: www.gatech.edu/main.php
